Help on Profiler

Hello:
I have setup a sqltrace to trace another sql server and
write to local sql table. I have try to defind the
template but it can't save the trace server and write to
local sql table. Is it possible to execute the sql trace
by simple way?

It's never a good idea to trace and have it write directly to a table. You
should always have it write to a file on a locally attached drive. You can
then easily import the file into a table later. This way you will have the
least amount of impact on the server while tracing. See the following and
the associated sp's in BooksOnLine.

Help needed?

Hi

I'm a newbie to SQL server..... l'm building a website where companies can save important data. I have a SQL server available but I'm not sure how to store the data. Should I create a new database for every user or should I store everything in the same database and then use a UserId to recognize the data and the user?

The data stored for each user are stored in tables which are exactly the same so all tables could be gathered into one table and then a UserId could tell which records belong to whom.

Hope my english isn't too bad..otherwise just ask me questions and I'll get back A.S.A.P.

1 database will support many users. As you suggested, you would create a user table and each user would have an entry there. The primary key of that table (e.g. : UserId) would be used as a Foreign Key in other tables to identify which user owns the data. e.g. : an orders table would have a userId column to specify which user the order belonged to.

You probably should just use a single database. Unless there are overriding issues like you distribute the database to the company. Then you wouldn't want one company to get another companies data. I'm assuming there is a single application where all the companies log in to the same site. If each company has separate sites, then you might actually need separate apps (and databases) for each.

Single app / db is easier to maintain but realize that changes for one then apply to all.

i have to make one application with msde sql server
in my app i want to save in one field a big data(more than 2 milions caracters)
from documentations of sql 2000 server i understanded that a field text can store aboute 2^31-1 caracters. but when i build the insert query with this long data the msde tells me that i try to insert too long data value(permiesed length is 128 caracters).
please tell me where i'm wrong
i have to make some settings to can insert more than 128 caracters?

You can change it by going into Tools, Options and results tab up to a
value of 8192. Thats all QA can handle.
If you need to import a huge string of data, you might as well use DTS
to import that text thru a text file. I am not sure as I have never

be using double-quotes instead of single-quotes around your value -- switch
to single quotes if that's the case, and the problem should go away...

If you insist on wanting to add more charactors in one shot.. the easy
way is to store the text in one text file.. Open DTS package and create
connection to your DB and another connection to your text file. Then do
a data transfermation to your table column...! If you have a primary
key in the table, put that key value in the text file as a column and
pump the data into the table..! You can also do this thru ActiveX in
DTS..! I tested it and it worked..!

I use Microsoft SQL Web Data Administrator and i didn't find options.
please explain how i can modify this limit

be using double-quotes instead of single-quotes around your value -- switch
to single quotes if that's the case, and the problem should go away...

Query Analyzer only supports 128 chars by default.. You can increase by
going into options and make it use upto 8192 charactors..!
If you insist on wanting to add more charactors in one shot.. the easy
way is to store the text in one text file.. Open DTS package and create
connection to your DB and another connection to your text file. Then do
a data transfermation to your table column...! If you have a primary
key in the table, put that key value in the text file as a column and
pump the data into the table..! You can also do this thru ActiveX in
DTS..! I tested it and it worked..!

i have to make one application with msde sql server
in my app i want to save in one field a big data(more than 2 milions caracters)
from documentations of sql 2000 server i understanded that a field text can store aboute 2^31-1 caracters. but when i build the insert query with this long data the msde tells me that i try to insert too long data value(permiesed length is 128 caracters).
please tell me where i'm wrong
i have to make some settings to can insert more than 128 caracters?

more than that (the results will be truncated, though -- no error message).

|||I did some research on that error, and the only guess I have is that you may
be using double-quotes instead of single-quotes around your value -- switch
to single quotes if that's the case, and the problem should go away...

Query Analyzer only supports 128 chars by default.. You can increase by
going into options and make it use upto 8192 charactors..!
If you insist on wanting to add more charactors in one shot.. the easy
way is to store the text in one text file.. Open DTS package and create
connection to your DB and another connection to your text file. Then do
a data transfermation to your table column...! If you have a primary
key in the table, put that key value in the text file as a column and
pump the data into the table..! You can also do this thru ActiveX in
DTS..! I tested it and it worked..!
